Samsung has officially unveiled the Galaxy S25 Ultra, and it is time to see what has changed over the past year. The Galaxy S25 Ultra takes the top spot among the Galaxy S25 series, offering more features than other related models. Of course, it has to be compared to its predecessor — the Galaxy S24 Ultra. So, how much better is the new Galaxy S25 Ultra, and is it worth the upgrade?

The Galaxy S24 Ultra is good for another year (at least)

At a glance, it may seem like the Galaxy S25 Ultra and the S24 Ultra are very similar, and in some ways, they are. They are both massive, powerful titanium phones with high-end specifications and great displays. The truth is, however, that the Galaxy S25 Ultra is only a minor upgrade from the S24 Ultra. Yes, the new chip is exciting, but the Galaxy S24 Ultra's performance is still exceptional. The Galaxy series has come a long way, and upgrading a year-old phone isn't a necessity. On the other hand, what if you're upgrading from an older phone? Is the Galaxy S24 Ultra a better deal than the Galaxy S25 Ultra? The answer is yes, especially with the serious discounts you can get on Back Market. The two phones are very similar in display, camera performance and battery life. Admittedly, the Galaxy S25 Ultra will be slightly faster and have an extra AI feature or two. However, if those aren't your top priorities, consider getting a discounted Galaxy S24 Ultra from Back Market instead.

Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra vs S24 Ultra specifications

The Galaxy S25 Ultra is Samsung's most advanced smartphone. It is a hardware powerhouse, featuring some of the best specs you'll find on any smartphone, such as the class-leading Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset and the iconic Samsung quad-camera system. The Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset delivers powerful performance, smooth graphics and improved energy efficiency, enhancing speed, gaming and overall device responsiveness. The S25 Ultra also comes with a full suite of inventive and handy AI features. On the other hand, the Galaxy S24 Ultra is still a solid smartphone – one of the best Samsung has ever produced. It is smaller than the S25 Ultra and doesn't feature the 50MP ultra-wide camera, but it still provides excellent performance. For instance, it offers Bluetooth S Pen capabilities that the S25 Ultra lacks. Here's how the two generations compare on specs:

1. Resolution is the number of pixels on a screen; higher resolution means sharper, clearer images and text.

2. The refresh rate is how many times per second the screen updates its image, and a higher refresh rate, like 120 Hz, makes scrolling, animations and games look smoother.

3. RAM (Random Access Memory) temporarily stores data so apps and tasks can run smoothly. More RAM helps with faster performance and better multitasking.

Design: the smallest of changes for the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra

It is easy to confuse the Galaxy S25 Ultra and the S24 Ultra based on looks alone. The two phones look almost identical, with only a few Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra design differences. The newer device has rounded corners and flatter edges for a better in-hand feel, and it comes in seven colour options. Regarding dimensions, the S25 Ultra is 0.5mm taller, 1.4mm narrower and 0.4mm slimmer. It is also lighter, weighing in at 218 grams – 14 grams lighter than its predecessor. Even with the sleeker and lighter design, the S25 Ultra still manages to have a slightly larger display at 6.9 inches, compared to the S24 Ultra's 6.8-inch display. The S25 Ultra also features the updated Corning Gorilla Armor 2, offering better scratch and drop protection than the S24 Ultra's Corning Gorilla Armor glass. Regarding dust and water resistance, both phones have an official IP68 rating.

Display: only a few pixels of difference

The Galaxy S25 Ultra has adopted thinner bezels (borders around the display) to accommodate a slightly larger screen. The handset has a bright and vibrant 6.9-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with a maximum brightness of 2,600 nits for better visibility in sunlight and a smooth 120 Hz variable refresh rate. The display automatically adjusts colours and contrast based on what you’re viewing, and the 2X (120 Hz) refresh rate makes animations and scrolling smoother. The new phone is taller and features thinner bezels to accommodate the 0.1-inch bigger screen, a 4% increase in the screen-to-body ratio compared to the Galaxy S24 Ultra, meaning more of the front is screen in the S25 Ultra. However, the bigger screen reduces the sharpness slightly, changing from 505 pixels per inch (ppi) on the S24 Ultra to 498 ppi on the S25 Ultra. Both phones feature an under-display fingerprint scanner, thanks to the AMOLED screen.

Performance: Snapdragon 8 Elite vs Snapdragon 8 Gen 3

This is the most significant upgrade in the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra. Under the hood, the S25 Ultra has the Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy, which, according to Samsung, provides a 40% improvement compared to its predecessor, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy. Like the CPU, the chipset's GPU is about 30% faster. The S25 Ultra also supports Vulkan Engine API and improved ray tracing, meaning video games should run more smoothly and look more realistic. Qualcomm upgraded the S25 Ultra's processor, allowing it to handle tasks like generative editing directly on the phone instead of relying on cloud processing. In simple terms, the S25 Ultra’s processor is smarter and faster since Samsung has upgraded the NPU (Neural Processing Unit), which handles AI-related tasks. Before, features like generative editing (a feature that lets you edit photos using AI) needed an internet connection because they were processed on the cloud (remote servers). Now, the phone can handle these tasks on its own.

S Pen: it isn't as good as it used to be

This is one of the features where the S24 Ultra outshines the S25 Ultra. The S Pen stylus on the S24 Ultra allows you to write, draw, navigate apps, take quick notes, use air gestures for hands-free control and even function as a remote shutter for the camera. However, the new S Pen doesn't feature Bluetooth connectivity, meaning you can no longer use it as a remote shutter to capture photos. Air actions are also missing in the S25 Ultra. Samsung claims that most Ultra users weren't utilising the Bluetooth-based features of the S Pen, which is why they are missing in the S25 Ultra. You can still use the S Pen more traditionally for taking notes, using the Circle to Search feature and drawing on the Galaxy S25 Ultra's screen.

Camera: minor hardware changes, major software changes

Both the Galaxy S25 Ultra and S24 Ultra have 200MP wide-angle and 50/10MP telephoto cameras. The main difference lies in the ultra-wide camera: the S25 Ultra has a new 50MP ultra-wide camera that replaces the 12MP option in the S24 Ultra. This feature lets you take photos and videos at virtually any zoom range, from 0.5x to 100x. The ultra-wide sensor also serves as a macro shooter, letting you get closer to tiny objects. Beloved features like 8K and 4K video shooting remain common on both phones, but the S25 Ultra has learned new tricks. The phone can now shoot better videos in low-light conditions and has an audio eraser feature that helps remove background noise from a video. The S25 Ultra also introduces a virtual depth-of-field control button in Expert RAW mode and the option to shoot in Galaxy Log.

Battery: similar capacity

Both the S25 Ultra and the S24 Ultra have 5,000 mAh batteries. However, Samsung says that the S25 Ultra can provide 31 hours of video playback, compared to the S24 Ultra's 30 hours. One hour is hardly a dealbreaker, but it might feel like a big difference when your smartphone is about to die.

AI: the S25 Ultra goes all in

The Galaxy S25 Ultra comes with the One UI 7 operating system. Its most prominent upgrade is the more intelligent Gemini-based AI. The new AI understands text better and can process speech, photos and videos. It is also more intuitive – better at understanding what you are asking and why – and finds the best solutions to your queries. It can now perform more functions, like sending a photo to a contact, adjusting phone settings such as brightness and font and many other tasks without any intervention. All these features will also be available on the Galaxy S24 Ultra with a One UI 7 update.

With Samsung's announcement of the Galaxy S25 Ultra, many are debating whether to upgrade their smartphones or to save some money by sticking with the Galaxy S24 Ultra. The S25 Ultra boasts a stunning display, the latest Snapdragon processor and an impressive spec sheet. However, the S24 Ultra holds its own in most areas and even includes features missing in the newer model. Here's a breakdown of the pros and cons of both smartphones.

Final thoughts: the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra is good for another year

The Galaxy S25 Ultra and S24 Ultra are both impressive smartphones with only minor differences. Typically, newer models take the crown simply by being the latest release – but with these two, the gap isn't so obvious. Yes, there are ways in which the S25 Ultra is better than the S24 Ultra. It offers a slightly better battery life, an improved design, a larger display, enhanced performance and a somewhat better camera. However, the S24 Ultra is just as good as its counterpart in most ways. It also retains the S Pen Bluetooth functionality, which the newer model lacks. In addition, with its price at an all-time low, the S24 Ultra offers excellent value – meaning you don't necessarily need to upgrade to the S25 Ultra.
